Is Your Daily Life a
Reflection of Your True Values?
Do you really know
yourself? Do you really know what you stand for, what motivates you,
and what your core values are?
Most of us do not take
the time to access this personal wisdom, but it is a powerful
foundation for decision making. Once you are aware of your values,
it is easier to make decisions and choices using your values as a
guiding light. If something is not consistent with who you are and
what’s important to you, it becomes easier to see that as your
truth. No longer will you choose out of fear or settle for less,
because your values are there to support you.
Once you begin
to understand your values, you can check in with how you feel in a
given moment and circumstance – making it possible for your daily
choices to become more congruent with who you are and what you stand
for. With each choice you make that aligns with your values, the
more your life as a whole will reflect those values.
It is
important to acknowledge that when we live in a way that is
inconsistent with our values, it can make us sick. It can have a
negative impact on our physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing.
I read an article by Debbie Lane where she shares, "I once had a
daily stomach ache on my way into a particular job I held. When I
began to focus on what was at the root of the discomfort, I realized
that I was working for a company that I didn't trust. I felt that
the values stated, conflicted with the way I observed the staff
treated and in turn, the clients of that group. I left that job and
have never looked back!"
This resonated with me and I hope it
does you. I have been in similar situations in my life – those where
I stayed, increasing my discomfort, and also those where I decided
to leave, bringing me relief and joy!
I have learned, over
the years, how it is best to take the path of my values and joy
versus staying in a situation, relationship, habit, or belief that
is not right for me.
Why do we stay in situations that are
not right for us? Sometimes we push down our emotions and awareness
because we were taught to or think we should. The idea of having to
be like everyone else can be detrimental in keeping us in situations
that don’t feel right. Fear can also keep us frozen in unwanted
scenarios, like the fear that another good situation or replacement
isn’t available. Thoughts like, “This may be the best that I can
get,” limit your possibilities while being in opposition with your
innermost values and sense of self.
Listen to what your
emotions or tugs of intuition communicate. Listening doesn’t mean
immediate action - just that you take time to listen and honestly
process the underlying message.
If what we continue to do,
think, or believe is against our truest nature - the pure fiber and
value of who we are - it is always the best choice to change.
Staying oppositional to your values is a death spiral – meaning that
the genuine, passionate, and creative aspects of self will slowly
die off month by month, year by year. We reject our true self to the
point that it is harmed and we are no longer who we really are -
mentally, emotionally, and physically.
When you understand
your values as they reflect in how you feel about a given moment or
circumstance, it becomes possible to make changes and decisions that
are in alignment with who you are. It breaks you free of a cycle of
settling for less or compromising out of fear.
When you
start to change your life – choice by choice – you will move into
living a life that is consistent with your values, what you’re
passionate about, and who you really are. You are worthy of this!
You are worthy of living a life you desire, one that is best for you
mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically.
Journaling questions to assist you in being more aware of your true
values and truest nature: What are my core values?
What am I passionate about? What makes my heart sing? What
makes me want to get out of bed in the morning? What is my true
essence? If I were a color, what would it be and why? What
motivates me? What do I stand for? What is most important to
me?
