When things are not working out… Stop Everything!
When things are not working out like planned, when things are not
going your way, and when no matter what you do you cannot change a
situation, one of the best courses of action is to stop and do
nothing. I know it may sound crazy, but it is wise advice.
Did you ever consider that maybe you are not in control? Did you
ever consider that maybe something different or better could
transpire for you, if you would just get out of your own way? If
these thoughts have not crossed your mind before, take a moment to
meditate on them.
When things are not going my way, I find
that it is best to stop whatever I am trying to do, accomplish, or
solve. I stop making an effort in order to allow the Universe the
best opportunity to present the next step to me.
Let’s say
that you want to move to Washington D.C. and are trying to find a
new job there. For three months you have been trying everything you
can think of to land a job in D.C. You are out of ideas and out of
steam. What should you try next? Stopping. Stopping the constant
push. Quiet yourself and do nothing about pursuing a job in D.C. for
a couple of weeks. See what happens.
You might be thinking,
“But I have to find a job, I want it to be in D.C. I just can’t stop
looking.” I want to challenge you to try stopping. Set an intention
like: “God, I thought that living and working in D.C. was right for
me, if yes open doors there, and if no, open up something else for
me.” Then do nothing more towards making it happen. Enjoy your days.
Take walks outside; breathe in the fresh air. Enjoy time meditating,
reading, exercising, and perusing a hobby or interest.
Perhaps someone you know in D.C. will call you with an inside track
on a great job, in a field you hadn’t thought of. Perhaps, as you
are leisurely reading the newspaper or cruising the internet, you’ll
learn of a new opportunity in Tampa – not a bad place to consider
living, and it is near the beach!
Most of us have learned
that co-creating our future with God and the Universe is an
effective way to attract what we want. This is a simpler way to
live, as it prevents us from fanatically pushing in the first place.
Co-create by intending what you want, leaving the door open for that
or something better, and then turning it over to God and the
Universe. As you wait to see what will manifest, practice the art of
enjoying each day, each moment, with trust that the future holds
great opportunities.
This part can be scary. You may think,
“But what will people say? They will ask me what I am doing and I
can’t say that I am doing nothing towards making things work out.”
At the end of the day, it does not really matter what they say.
Moreover, you are doing something. You are mastering ‘surrender and
trust,’ a distinguished spiritual achievement.
Even once
you invite co-creation into your life, there will be times when the
old behavior of pushing to make things happen will jump in.
Interestingly, when this occurs it usually takes a while for us to
recognize that we are repeating those old behaviors. Our first clue
towards this realization will likely occur from symptoms brought on
by stress and exhaustion. This will make us reevaluate how we are
approaching things, since what we are doing is not working and is
not healthy.
When this newfound clarity arrives, the best
course of action is to do nothing towards making 'it' happen. Stop
and say, “God I cannot figure this out myself. I turn it over to
you. This is what I desire and why. Thank you for giving me this or
something better.” Remember, God’s time – is not always your time.
So if time is critical, be sure to include it in your intention.
Now that you have stopped and set your
intention, let it go and
live each day with joy. You already know that what happens next will
be perfect for you, even if it was not what you had envisioned!
Isn’t it funny how that always works out? Our vision of what is
possible is not God’s vision. I don’t know about you, but I’ll take
God’s vision every time!
