Self-Discipline is Your Friend

Inspirational Article for September 2024
What is self-discipline? It is the ability to do something, even when you don’t feel like doing it. It is doing and completing the challenging things. It’s one of the highest personal qualities to have and is an important part of your spiritual self-mastery.

Most of the time it is about a longer-term perspective. With an eye towards your long-term end goal, you are able to stop avoiding what is distracting or doing only what is easy. This allows you to do the challenging and new things – the things that will lead to your desired life and long-term happiness! But it also works with short term concerns. Use your self-discipline to complete certain life requirements, so you can fully go out and play, relax, or engage in your favorite hobby.

Why do most of us avoid self-discipline? There is belief held by many that self-discipline is limiting and confining. Not true! Self-discipline is expanding beyond your wildest dreams. It does not limit or confine you. Rather, it allows you to expand in the direction of your heart and soul’s desire.

Simply, you cannot have life force energy without self-discipline. You cannot have balanced energy without self-discipline. You cannot accomplish your dreams, heal, or maintain good health without self-discipline. And, you cannot grow spiritually without self-discipline.

Self-Discipline helps you expand the area of your chosen focus! It doesn’t mean you have to be self-disciplined all the time – just use it as the tool it is. When something is important to you, self-discipline is the added magic that helps make things happen!

Let’s take an example like you want to lose weight and live healthier. Here are some ideas to embrace self-discipline and work towards that goal:

----  Perhaps your idea of self-discipline is sticking to one course and never wavering. “Here is your menu; you have to follow it religiously for 10 weeks, no exceptions.” Instead, try defining discipline as: I choose and design my own discipline. Choose to eat healthy foods six days a week with one day to splurge, or only allow three small treats a week. Choose to begin with moderate exercise three times a week, instead of being let-down that you aren’t working out every day. The key word here is ‘choose’. You are designing what your discipline looks like and your life may look different than anyone else’s. This is how self-discipline can be freeing versus confining as you are choosing how to integrate it into your life.

---  Another consideration is realizing how it is import to your overall life. When you know something is important, yet still find yourself avoiding it – it’s time to turn to your inner discernment. Ask yourself (both inside and out), “Do I really want health and wellbeing?” When you want something bad enough, you discipline yourself and your time to go after it. We know this to be true, so we know that discipline works. The key then, is wanting it or realizing its importance. Once you recognize the full importance of your goals, it’s easier to operate from self-discipline.

---  What does it mean if you say it’s important and you still avoid it? That’s your cue to dig deeper. Take time to process and journal your thoughts and feelings around your goals and what will change when you achieve them. Is some part of you or your unconscious-self blocking progress? Are there some old repeating patterns hindering your enthusiasm for change? What hidden belief or fear could be blocking or limiting your discipline? When this is discovered and fully processed, discipline is given the freedom to flourish joyfully.

Self-Discipline is an incredible tool – but it does need your focus and choice to kick-start it. Learning how to incorporate it into your life gives you freedom, more abilities, and resources to make your goals happen. That has tremendous power while also making you feel amazing about accomplishing what you are after!
